One of the primary causes of TMD are the following: Bad bites, Grinding of teeth, chewing of nail, Fingernail bite, habitual Clenching, Post Surgery, Automobile Accidents, physical malformation, Trauma and injury, underdeveloped dental arch, spinal problems, poor posture and neurological disturbances are just some of the identified causes of TMD.

These possible causes would result to stress in the facial muscles and the muscles surrounding the jaw, producing unusual muscular activities, which may later affect different other regions of the body, like the neck, back, jaw, shoulders and face.

    How to diagnose TMD?

With the use of TEN’s and K-7 evaluation system, the dentist can fully asses the extent of damage and how to properly treat it.

    What is Neuromuscular Dentistry?

Neuromuscular Dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals with the study of the teeth, facial muscle, jaws and its surrounding muscles. By objectively evaluating the relationship and function between the teeth and jaw joints – a proper bite is achieved, thereby eliminating the stress and the pain associated with TMD.

    How is TMD treated?

The immediate treatment for TMD is to alleviate, if not eliminate the discomfort that TMD brings. In here, the dentist will check how the jaw is misaligned by having the patient undergo TENs first.

The next step is to restore the person’s proper bite. This is done by either manually manipulating the jaw, or through the use of orthodontic procedures designed to achieve optimal bite.

Another method is by the wearing of orthosis – which is a device worn over the teeth to stabilize the patient’s bite.
