We refer to orthodontics to specializes in the manual manipulation of deformed, gapped or misaligned teeth which will improve its appearance and function.
Today, one of the most performed procedures by orthodontics is the Invisalign treatment. This is the latest innovation when it comes to tooth modification and manipulation methods, which has gained considerable popularity due to its high-tech approach and its long term effectiveness.
How does the Invisalign procedure work?
1. The procedure starts by taking x-rays, impressions and images of the patient’s teeth – that are then sent to the Align Company, the manufacturer of Invisalign.
2. At the Align Company, the images and impressions are then scanned and put through a computer to create a 3D-design of your teeth. This way, the orthodontist can create a specific treatment plan.
3. The 3D-design is then sent to another facility to be manipulated by experts, where the model teeth is individualized and positioned perfectly, according to the orthodontist’s prescription. Using a special computer software, they would then simulate the teeth’s movements thru stages, giving the orthodontist an idea as to how it will progress, how the changes may occur, and how to modify the treatment.
Once approved by the orthodontist, the company will then create a plastic custom made series of resin aligners for each stage of the simulation, and then shipped back to the orthodontist.
Sometimes, the resin aligner is also combined with other devices to achieve optimal results. Devices such as buttons and rubber bands, are likewise used to keep the teeth aligned and properly positioned.
To achieve the desired result, patients are advised to wear the resin aligner 20-22 hours a day, to avoid any delays and to avoid the increase of treatment time.
The patient would then change the resin aligner every 2 weeks to move on to the next stage of the treatment. After the last stage is done and the treatment is complete, the patient would then be required to wear a plastic retainer, usually worn only at night time, to ensure that the teeth remain aligned.
